To celebrate the return of mackerel to our waters, we will be grilling fresh mackerel baps this Friday lunchtime at the farm shop at £3.95.  Accompanied by pickled cucumber and Garlic Mayonnaise from the Garlic Farm, this is a bargain lunch. Let me know if you can make it.

With the warmer weather, mackerel are back in the Solent in good numbers.  I think they are one of the most beautiful fish; both to look at and to eat.  However, this only applies to fresh mackerel, as they lose their colour, flavour and texture quickly so it is important to get them into the pan as soon after they have been caught as possible.  mackerel_crop

When buying mackerel, look for the bright metallic green stripes and bright eyes.  Due to it’s high oil content it does spoil quickly, but the advantage is that it is a very good source of omega-3.  There really is no finer taste than fresh mackerel, so we look forward to seeing you on Friday.

Pete should be catching mackerel for the rest of the summer, so come and get your Fresh Fish Friday Mackerel at £6 per kg.
