mackerel_stripesThe mackerel have arrived in numbers and we are offering butterflied mackerel this week for a magnificent £1.75 each – perfect for the BBQ or grilled for a delicious, healthy supper.  With no bones to worry about, you can just cook for 4 minutes and eat straight away.

Fresh mackerel is hard to beat, with strong flavours that are robust enough to handle spicy marinades and sauces.  However, it’s also fantastic with just a bit of lemon juice or rolled in oats and fried for breakfast.

Below is a mackerel recipe with harissa and orange – grab a pot of our outstanding rose harissa and an orange and away you go!


  • 2 x Butterflied Mackerel
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small orange, grated zest and juice
  • 1-2 tsp rose harissa
  • 50g pine nuts, toasted
  • small bunch coriander, very roughly chopped

Sift together the flour and paprika and then coat the mackerel inside and out.

Whisk together half the olive oil, the orange zest and juice and the harissa.

Fry the butterflied mackerel (skin side first) for 4 minutes then add the harissa paste for another minute until sticky, then add pine nuts and coriander and serve.
