Asparagus Season has started – just six weeks of this glorious spring vegetable to enjoy.  It’s a short, sharp season, but it helps to bring us out of the hungry gap when the British fruit and veg season is at it’s most uninspiring.

Steamed, stir fried, grilled or sliced raw in salads, you need to enjoy local asparagus in any way possible.  The priority is getting it freshly picked, as the longer it sits in transit, the quicker the sugars turn to starch.  That’s why our asparagus is delivered by the very people who grow it – and it’s usually picked the morning of delivery. Our asparagus is grown by Pete Davey and delivered by Sophie Davey from Midhurst in the South Downs, and it’s an absolute bargain at £2 / bunch.

Not only is asparagus delicious, it’s also very good for you with each spear stuffed full of antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients. I’m particularly impressed to note that it is a rich source of glutathione, a detoxifying compound that helps offset the obligatory glass of white wine that you must have with asparagus.
