We have some fantastic new baked produce in the shop this week including Gingerbread, biscuits and cakes from Horsham Gingerbread as well as Bosham’s very own Farmhouse Cookery Cakes.

Lesley from Horsham Gingerbread popped into the shop with some samples of her gingerbread and biscuits and I have to say I was seriously impressed.  “Horsham was historically the home of gingerbread in the 19th Century, but in 1917 Horsham’s last gingerbread maker, Mr Lovekin, died, and with him his secret recipe. It was only in 2009 that Jeremy Knight, Curator of Horsham Museum, found a 200 year old recipe book for sale which had an important connection with Horsham. Written by a member of the Shelley family, it contained, in a fine clear hand,
a recipe for gingerbread” and it was Lesley who set about recreating the gingerbread using modern methods.

The result is a seriously tasty, chewy, dark and wonderful gingerbread that is unlike any other commercial equivalent.

Lesley has done the same with biscuits: taking old recipes and recreating bygone tastes and textures with biscuits that pack a tasty punch with depth and chew.  They are different and very good. We have a selection coming with tasters, so give them a try this Friday.

Not having much of a sweet tooth, we have been a bit light in the cake department, but have decided to step up a gear.  We have some mighty fine looking cakes from the team at Farmhouse Cookery in Bosham.  Each cake is made and iced by hand, baked the way cakes should be, with real ingredients and nothing artificial added. This is traditional English baking with a varied range of fruit cakes, sponges, tea breads and pavlovas that are mouth-wateringly good.

We have in the shop the following cakes:

  • Coffee and Walnut
  • Buttercream Sponge
  • Chocolate Fudge Cake
  • Lemon Drizzle
  • Victorian Peach and Fig

They are available in a range of sizes and can be pre-ordered, so if you need a birthday cake or want to impress friends with a decent spread at tea time, let us know.
