We are excited to be celebrating some of our great local wine producers during English Wine Week with a talk and wine tasting by Liz Sagues on Wednesday 30th May at 6.30pm. Liz Sagues is a Journalist and has just published A Celebration of English Wine (Robert Hale 2018). She was the Regional winner in 2005, 2011 of the Louis Roederer International Wine Winters’ Awards. She will be signing copies of her book at the end of the evening.
We will be tasting wine from some of the following local vineyards: Danebury, Hambeldon, Ashling Park and Bolney. Gavin will be providing some delicious canapes to match the wines and you can book your place for £20 (over 18’s only). There will be limited places, so best be quick.
A Celebration of English Wine was published just over a month ago and tells how English wine has greatly changed in recent years. Royalty and heads of government drink it and pour it for foreign dignitaries, and it is sold to some thirty wine-drinking nations and even beats champagne in blind tasting challenges. Its main grape varieties are major international names and its makers are skilled professionals. From a largely amateur-instigated cottage industry it has become an increasingly serious, quality-led commercial proposition – one that regularly makes news at home and abroad.
This book explains why and how that has come about, telling the story of winemaking in England from the Romans to the present era. Most of all, it celebrates the wine itself and the people who make it. Its pages takes readers on a virtual tour of many of the UK’s most significant vineyards, long established or comparatively new, in the southern heartland of vine growing, on the western and northern fringes or at points in between. The reader will meet men and women whose expertise, character and belief have created wines of which all Britons can be truly proud. Foreword by Oz Clarke.
If you can’t make this evening, then Jennifer will be doing a tasting of Bolney Wines on Saturday 2nd June.
