The fruit and veg season is really kicking off now – with Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cherries ripe and ready, cos and gem lettuce, pea shoots, rocket, basil, watercress, tomatoes and radishes on the salad front, and New Potatoes, Maris Piper, peas, courgettes, tenderstem broccoli, oyster mushrooms and peppers propping up the veg.
These are all grown locally (within 30 miles of the shop) and are in superb quality, having literally just been picked. I’ve been eating the peas like sweets, and the strawberries have a wonderful smell. Everything is unbelieveably fresh and is also incredible value.
A generous bag of peas is £1.99, a bunch of tenderstem is 99p, little gem lettuce cost under 50p each – and it’s so good.
The new potatoes, tenderstem and peas can be eaten in salads as well as your traditional veg, perfect with a knob of butter or some good finishing olive oil, while the courgettes and peppers are amazing on the BBQ (as are the peaches!).
It’s definitely time to get creative, especially when it can all be eaten raw – so mix it up and enjoy fabulous Hampshire and Sussex produce which you can.
