The winners were recently announced at the World Cheese Awards 2022, with 11 UK Super Gold Champions. You’ll be glad to know that we currently stock 3 of those winners and will be sourcing a couple more shortly.
We have two local Super Gold winners: Stoney Cross is one of our old favourites made by Lyburn Cheese, and Seven Sisters is made by High Weald Dairy which we have recently started stocking. The 3rd winner is Cropwell Bishop Stilton which is still producing outstanding Stilton
Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, this year’s Awards attracted more than 4,000 entries from over 40 countries with a jury of accomplished judges including food commentators, retailers and buyers.
Mike Smales of Lyburn Farmhouse Cheeses said: “We are very pleased with the result at the World Cheese Awards. Stoney Cross has done well this year and continues to grow in poularity. It also won Gold at the British Cheese Awards. It looks like we will have to enlarge the ripening room for next year.”
Stoney Cross is Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers’ youngest offering. It is a mould ripened cheese, not dissimilar to a French Tomme De Savoie. It has a creamy, buttery texture, sweet flavours and an earthy finish. It is the perfect addition to a cheeseboard, even those who like a strong cheese enjoy Stoney Cross’s subtle flavour and smooth texture.
Seven Sisters Cheese is a semi-soft matured sheep milk cheese, coated in a layer of Hebridean seaweed. The cheese has “a fresh nuttiness, and the seaweed coating makes it difficult to resist”.
Mark Hardy, also from the dairy, said: “Having the seal of approval from so many experts in the cheese world is priceless for a cheesemaker. At the dairy, we put everything we have into our cheeses and only strive to make the best for our customers, so winning this trophy proves it’s all been worth it.”
