You’ll be pleased to know that we will have local asparagus and strawberries in the shop for this weekend’s celebrations.  The cold spring has delayed the season this year, but we should now see a steady supply of asparagus from Slade Farm in Rogate for the next 6-8 weeks, and Westlands Strawberries should be with us for most of the summer.

We have lots of asparagus recipes to choose from, including tarts, pasta and salads, but my favourite is still grilled on the BBQ in a little olive oil and sea salt, and topped with a poached egg.  Slade Farm grow their asparagus in Rogate and delivers it direct to our door the day it is picked.  As a result, it is unbelievably fresh and sweet and it’s short season should be celebrated.  They are available for £3.25/bunch.

This week also sees the arrival of Westlands Strawberries, and again, because they have been picked locally in Wickham, the quality cannot be beaten.  They are firm, juicy, and full-flavoured because they have been picked when they are ripe and ready to eat.  You can smell the perfumed scent before you bite into them. 227g punnet for £2.85
