The Stansted Highland herd does a fantastic job of maintaining the species-rich grassland of the Stansted historic parkland which is managed under Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship Scheme.

The Highland Cattle’s browsing habits are ideal for Stansted conservation projects and the herd has been used to clear bracken, open up the forest floor, and with their grazing and dunging, have become a key part of Stansted’s natural environment.  Their mixed sward grazing leads to a greater diversity of plant varieties, and Stansted now boast 12 different species of orchid amongst an array of wildflowers. This abundance creates superb wildlife habitat for insects and mammals, which then support the spectacular barn owl and other predators.

The Stansted estate now has the highest density of Barn Owls in the South Downs, and this is in large part thanks to the grazing Highland Cattle.

The herd has been increasing in size over the past 4 years, and we have just taken delivery of the first bull at the farm shop.  They are bred for beef, and you can be sure that this is the highest quality beef from Stansted’s low-input farming system. With no fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, and a year-round natural pasture-fed diet, this is the most healthy, sustainable, high-welfare beef available, with an unmatched provenance.

When you buy Stansted Highland Beef, you are supporting Colin and the team who tend to the cattle daily.  You are supporting this conservation project and encouraging a superb array of biodiversity.
