Pannage Pork 2025 – A Seasonal Hampshire Treasure
Every autumn, something truly special happens in the ancient woodlands of the New Forest. As the acorns, beech mast, and chestnuts fall, pigs are turned out to roam freely in a centuries-old tradition known as pannage. This practice not only protects the forest’s ponies and cattle—since acorns can be poisonous to them—but also produces one of the most distinctive, seasonal meats you’ll ever taste: Pannage Pork.
What Makes Pannage Pork Unique?
The pigs forage naturally, gorging themselves on nuts, roots, and fallen fruit, which infuses the meat with a rich, nutty depth of flavour. The combination of exercise and wild diet produces pork with superb marbling, dark colour, and incredible succulence—qualities you simply can’t replicate with conventional farming.
This year’s pannage season began on 15th September 2025 and will run until November 28th, and with a good crop of acorns across the Forest, the pigs have been thriving. This year’s pigs are a cross between Duroc and Large White, and they are right in the middle of the ancient oak forests, roaming from Lee’s farm to wherever the acorns are most plentiful. The result is a limited run of pork that celebrates the very best of the New Forest landscape and its ancient rights.
Why It Matters
- Sustainability: Pannage is one of the oldest forms of regenerative farming. By turning pigs out into the forest, the ecosystem is balanced naturally.
- Animal Welfare: The pigs roam freely, foraging as they please.
- Taste: Simply put, this is pork at its finest—flavoursome, juicy, and steeped in heritage.
- With the reduction in Farm Subsidies, Lee needs this income to continue farming and you are supporting this ancient right that is part of English cultural history. We have increased the cost of our pannage boxes to reflect this support, as well as increased costs at the abattoir.

Each year I order Pannage Pork from Stansted Farm Shop. The butcher is outstanding, he cuts the pork and prepares the orders all in good time.
No pork tastes as good as Pannage Pork!
