Description
We have new beer in the house – Powder Monkey Brewing Co is based in the historic grade 2 listed gunpowder magazine building in Gosport, with the building acting as inspiration for some explosive beers. Created by Oxford University biochemist head brewer Mark Hamlin, there is a superb choice of ales and stout.
Monkeys Charge DDH Pale Ale – A double dry-hopped pale ale, bursting with mango and tropical fruit flavours from two hop charges of Azacca and Amarillo. It pours with a bright golden haze and a soft malt body.
Explosion IPA – An authentic West Coast IPA using the classic ‘C’ hops that helped launch the craft beer revolution. A punchy hop aroma of pine and citrus leaps out the glass, light crystal malt in the body is pushed aside by an assertive bitterness to give a thirst-quenching finish.
Drop Anchor – A pale ale with a base of Vienna malt, this higher-kilned malt gives the beer a fuller body with a bready and toasted character. A dry-hop combination of Citra and El Dorado brings an onslaught of tropical fruit to make for a juicy and crushable beer.
BBQ Pitmaster Rye IPA – this rye IPA has a sweet centre of caramel malts that will complement the natural caramelisation of any grilled, marinated meats. The aroma is bursting with tropical and stone fruit flavours from a dry hop of Motueka and Ekuanot. Pairs well with all meats and the hop notes and slightly drying finish will particularly accentuate spice.
BBQ Sizzler NZ – This pale ale showcases New Zealand hops that bring a light and refreshing white grape and gooseberry aroma, reminiscent of a Sauvignon Blanc with subtle floral notes. This beer has been designed to pair with lighter dishes such as seafood and chicken.
Scuttlebutt Munich Helles – A Helles with a malt sweetness and subtle bready character from layers of Munich and Vienna malt. An all German hop profile perfectly balances the malt with a fresh fruit aroma soft bitterness.
Mary Rose Wheat Beer – Inspired by spices that can be found on display at The Mary Rose Museum, this unique beer has an intriguing herby aroma with savoury notes of cracked pepper and spice combining with bright citrus fruits. Wheat and oats in the body of the beer gives it a smooth sweetness which is complemented by the savoury yeast profile.
Bubbleheads Brut IPA – Champagne inspired, this IPA has been brewed using exogenous enzymes to allow all the residual sugars in the beer to be fermented, giving it an extremely dry finish. The body is paired with bubbles that carry aromas of sweet citrus fruits and floral notes from the addition of hops.
Fearless Monkey – This pale ale has a bright citrus aroma due to the use of Lemondrop and Calypso hops. The taste is refreshing with notes of lemon zest and apple, and a clean crisp character. A simple malt body allows the hops to shine while also having a rounded bitterness.
Embrace Rhubarb and Hibiscus Sour – Powder Monkey’s first sour beer is bursting with rhubarb flavour, and complemented by the addition of hibiscus flowers which lend subtle notes of cranberry and redcurrant. This sour has a smooth malt body that combines with vanilla for a touch of sweetness, helping soften the beer before allowing a refreshingly tart finish.
